Liberal Arts College Association for Faculty Inclusion

The members of this association wish to commit ourselves to diversity and to assist in the recruitment and appointment of those committed to diversity, including underrepresented minorities (URM), to positions as postdoctoral fellows and faculty at liberal arts colleges.

Life as a scientist at a liberal arts college

Liberal arts colleges are typically small and residential. The emphasis is on the quality of the general education our undergraduates receive. Class sizes are kept small, so there’s lots of faculty-student interactions. Research can still be a component of the students’ overall experience at the institution.

I love teaching and researching at Grinnell because of the balance of these activities and because they can be integrated very well. We come to know our students very well, forming close mentor-mentee relationships – not unlike if they were PhD students – and we have the opportunity to mold not only their development as scientists, but their world view. Our students are excellent, accomplishing much while in college and in their further careers, and they are capable of high-level research work. The primary difference between our research programs and those at research-focused institutions is the smaller scale and the attendant slower rate of progress. I also enjoy the many opportunities for intellectual enrichment outside of science that comes in being part of a close-knit community of scholars.
